About Mother Tongue (Móðurmál)
Welkom bij het moedertaal programma! 
Sinds 1994 worden er op IJsland lessen gegeven
voor tweetalig sprekende kinderen, d.w.z kinderen
die een andere moedertaal hebben dan het IJslands.
Verschillende talen zijn over de jaren deel uitgaan
maken van het programma waaronder Russisch, Engels,
Spaans, Arabisch, Chinees, Pools, Thais, Japans,
en nu dus ook Nederlands.
In 2001 werd de vereniging voor ouders van tweetalige
kinderen opgericht om een structureel taalprogramma
met duidelijke doelstellingen te ontwikkelen.
De taalcursussen worden gefinancierd met lesgeld
en subsidies. De data voor de Nederlandse lessen
dit seizoen zijn als volgt: 17 januari, 31 januari,
14 februari, 7 maart, 14 maart, 28 maart, 11 april,
en 25 april. Het lesgeld per seizoen is 3500 kr
per kind, en 6000 kr voor broertjes/zusjes. Er
zijn twee lesgroepen, één voor kinderen
onder de 10, en één voor kinderen
vanaf 10 jaar.
De lessen zijn gebaseerd op verschillende thema’s
die zoveel mogelijk de typisch Nederlandse cultuur
benadrukken, zo is er bijvoorbeeld het Sinterklaas
thema. Bij de jongste groep staat spelenderwijs
leren centraal, terwijl de oudste groep onder
meer kennis maakt met de Nederlandse spelling
en grammatica. Marianne, de Nederlandse juf heeft
Nederlands als haar moedertaal en volgt momenteel
de studie? International Studies in Education?
aan de universiteit van IJsland.

Mission
The goal of the program is to provide bilingual
children with a solid foundation in their
second native language. The benefits of
bilingualism for children include enhanced
literacy and academic skills, a better understanding
of their second culture, and a better sense
of their own identity and the multicultural
world in which they live.

Admittance
Guidelines for Admittance
1. This program is designed for children
who live with two or more languages at home;
usually at least one parent is a native
speaker of a language other than Icelandic.
2. The child must have some knowledge and
understanding of the second native language,
i.e. be comfortable being immersed in the
second language.
3. In consultation with each language coordinator,
the right to restrict admittance to children
who the instructors feel would not benefit
from the program is reserved.
4. PARENTAL SUPPORT AND REGULAR ATTENDANCE
IS KEY.
Admittance rules may vary among language
groups. These rules apply to the English
group only.
