English
group
Curriculum
Description of groups

The size of the English program
is usually around 35 students, distributed
among three age groups, each with one instructor.
Volunteers for teaching assistants and substitute
teachers are always welcomed.
As students are at very different levels
of proficiency in English, they are grouped
according to their literacy levels; there
is some overlapping of ages among groups.
Multi-level Reading Levels
1. Pre-readers:
Typically between the ages of 4-6, students
have very limited or no reading experience
in their second native language.
2. Early Readers: Students know the letters
and sounds and are able to read simple words
and sentences in their second native language:
typically aged 6-9.
3. Reading Alone: Students can read complex
sentence structures and are able to read
alone: typically aged 9-12.
4. Proficient Readers: Students can read
complex texts in various subjects: aged
13+

Objectives
The primary goal of the program is to expand the
children's capacity to use and comprehend their
second native language, as well as to promote
comfort and understanding of their second language
culture. Thematic teaching is a core component
of the program. Goals developed within the thematic
framework are interdisciplinary, including language
and literacy skills, mathematics and science.
Teachers promote the use of authentic language
in ordinary conversation, games and dramatic play.
Other activities, such as listening to stories,
memorizing songs, and playing letter and word
games, encourage children to read, as well as
to increase their vocabulary. Task-based learning,
drama and literature are used to enhance reading
and writing activities by independent readers.
Television, music and the internet are valuable
classroom teaching tools, their purpose being
to familiarize students with various genres of
speech and writing in the second language.
Another goal is to expand the children's knowledge
of their second culture, including youth culture.
Teachers present cultural topics in ways most
appropriate to their particular students within
a unifying theme. Holidays are celebrated through
song, food, art activities and stories. Proficient
readers may engage in reading and writing activities
which deal with history, holidays, and cultural
events.

Themes
The school year is organized into themes. Each
unit topic is developed based on the goals and
guidelines laid out in the program description,
adapted to the individual needs of the students
in the group. Thematic topics vary from year to
year and are determined by teachers and students.
For example, for the Spring term 2009, the 13
years and older (7 Grade +) group investigated
"Extremes," the 9-12 years (4-6 Grade)
group learned about "Life, the Universe and
Everything," the 6-9 years (1-3 Grade) group
learned about "The Senses," and the
Pre-Schoolers' Group (4-6 years) practiced their
conversational and reading skills. There are also
stories, crafts, and lots of fun and creativity!
Structured reading and literacy-building time,
and listening to classic stories, are regularly
used as supplementary activities.
Schedule
Spring Term 2010 will run for 10 Saturdays, from
16 January - 20 March.
Costs
9,500kr per term (for first child)
8,550kr per term for siblings (10% discount)
Tuition to be paid by bank transfer, on or before
enrollment.
Resources
Instruction makes use of internet resources, as
well as traditional instructional materials. The
program works closely with the International Center
on Laugavegur 37 and foreign language programs
at the University of Iceland.
