About Mother Tongue (Móđurmál)

Welcome to our program

Instruction in the second native language (other than Icelandic) for bilingual children has been offered in Iceland since 1994. Numerous languages have been offered over the years, including Russian, English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Polish, Thai and Japanese.

Until 2000, the program was supported financially by the Sports and Recreation Consul of Reykjavík (Íţrótta og tómstundaráđ Reykjavíkur). In 2001, the Parents of Bilingual Children Association (PBCA) was formally established in order to develop a structured language program with clearly defined curricula and goals. The program is funded through tuition and grants.

We are grateful to Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, the former president of Iceland and a promoter of interlingual causes via her Institute, for her endorsement of our Móđurmál program.

The English group is returning in Fall 2011! The fall term will run for 12 Saturdays, 17 September - 3 December. Classes are held at Hagaskóli. Students from 4 years of age through the 7th grade are eligible to enroll. To enroll your child, please contact our department head, Sarah Bosse, at modurmalenglish@gmail.com.

Mission

The goal of the program is to provide bilingual children with a solid foundation in their second native language. The benefits of bilingualism for children include enhanced literacy and academic skills, a better understanding of their second culture, and a better sense of their own identity and the multicultural world in which they live.

Admittance

Guidelines for Admittance

1. This program is designed for children who live with two or more languages at home; usually at least one parent is a native speaker of a language other than Icelandic.

2. The child must have some knowledge and understanding of the second native language, i.e. be comfortable being immersed in the second language.

3. In consultation with each language coordinator, the right to restrict admittance to children who the instructors feel would not benefit from the program is reserved.

4. PARENTAL SUPPORT AND REGULAR ATTENDANCE IS KEY.

Admittance rules may vary among language groups. These rules apply to the English group only
